About The Facility

In 2007, SPREAD constructed Kameoka Plant that produces 21,000 heads of lettuce per day, which at the time was the world’s largest plant factory in terms of production.

After six years of trial and error, our cultivation and production management system was established. Profitability was achieved in 2013, which is often said to be difficult for large-scale plant factories. Our brand, “Vegetus”, can currently be found in approximately 2,200 supermarkets in Japan.

In 2017, We established a new factory in the Keihanna Kansai Science city(Kizugawa city, Kyoto Prefecture) called Techno Farm Keihanna. A leading vegetable production system called"Techno Farm™"which adopted automated cultivation technology has been constructed in this new factory. Together with Kameoka Plant, we will expand our production to 50,000 heads of lettuce per day.

In the future, we will create partnerships with companies and organizations of Japan and overseas to promote the construction of "Techno Farm™". In Japan, we will implement Franchise/Ownership partnership model in order to meet the goal of constructing 20 factories of "Techno Farm™" with the production capacity totaling 500,000 heads of lettuce per day and gaining 10% market share in Japan lettuce market. As for overseas, we will cooperate with local partner companies and provide technologies, logistics and sales support.

Contents of the Tour

  • Arrive by car:

    • Getting off the Kyoto Vertical Expressway "Kameoka IC", and you can see our plant immediately.

  • Arrive by public transportation:

    • First, you can take the Shinkansen line, JR line from Kyoto station, then get off at Kameoka station by JR San-in main line(Sagano line) for Nijyo/Saga Arashiyama/Kameoka/Sappori direction, then by taking a taxi you will arrive at our plant in 10 minutes.

In "Techno Farm " , we introduced new innovations to the plant factory such as automation of cultivation to realize reduction of running cost and environmental burden.As a new solution that enables the production of vegetables in the area where agriculture was difficult, it can contribute to local production and local consumption,and we will expand this business to the world.

Definition

Plant factory is a system that provides an artificial environment to suit the vegetables crops. By controlling environmental conditions such as light levels and temperature, it is possible to make vegetable production efficient and systematic.

Generally, The plant factory adopts solution culture, which provides natural light or artificial light as a light source to grow vegetables.In addition, Methods such as temperature and humidity control, CO2 starvation prevention by adding CO2 are also adopted. By utilizing these technologies, it is possible to plan the production of vegetables throughout the year.

Current Situation

Plant factory has been started and developed in Europe, mainly in the Netherlands. Currently, Plant factory has been turned into more advanced system that using technology to realize not only automatic production process but also manage the production data from environment improving such as humidly/temperature control to personnel management.

In Japan, Central Research institute of Hitachi, Ltd. first started on research and development of plant factory from the 1980s. And they succeeded in building the environment control system and putting it into practical use. In 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan jointly launched the "Plant Factory Working Group under the Agriculture, Commerce and Industry Collaboration", and created the third boom of the plant factory. And now Japan has became the leader in artificial light type hydroponic technology field.

On the other hand, there are still many issues about operating the plant factory. Among 420 companies operating the plant factory, there are 75% of them are in deficit. The reason  may be that initial cost of plant installation and the operation cost such as maintenance cost and management cost are very expensive, but the unit price of vegetables is low, so it is difficult to make plant factory business profitable.

In recent years, there are some undertaking studies about the plant factory. For example, one study about LED high-speed cultivation method is undertaken jointly by Showa Denko and Shigyo Masayoshi professor from Yamaguchi University Faculty of Agriculture.

Technology Scheme

There are 2 types pf plant factories.

1. Sunlight type:

  • This type of plant factory is basically using the sunlight to grow vegetables in a semi-closed environment. It provides supports under the rainy weather and suppresses high temperature under the hot weather.

2. Artificial light type:

  • This type of plant factory is built in a fully closed environment under completely control by people. Without using any sunlight and, it grows vegetables by providing light by fluorescent lights and LED.

In Japan, the artificial light type is more widely adopted rather than the sunlight type. Because the artificial light type is easily to control, and on the other hand the sunlight type is easily influenced by the weather and day and night.

Merit & Strength

1. High-speed production, stable supply and high safety

  • It is possible to promote growth of vegetables by controlling the environment to suit the vegetables crops. Without being affected by climate change, the plant factory can produce vegetables with a certain amount, certain quality and stable price. In addition, there is no invasion of pathogenic bacteria and pests, so it can grow vegetables without pesticide.

2. Easy to manage

  • Different from the general vegetable production method depending on farmers' experience, by standardizing cultivation process, even inexperience people can perform the vegetable production work. Moreover, work in plant factory is relatively simple and easy, so the elderly and people with disabilities can be hired to preform the work in plant factory .

Demerit & Weakness

1. Best practices have not been established yet

  • There are few successful cases related to plant factory. A lot of problems still need to be fixed,

2. Low profitability

  • Initial cost of plant installation and the operation cost such as maintenance cost and management cost are very expensive, but the unit price of vegetables is low, so it is difficult to make plant factory business profitable.
