About The Facility

HIKARI Lab provides two unprecedented and easy-to-use psychological care services which are SPARX and Kokoro works. By offering these services, we aim at solving and easing psychological problems.

"SPARX" is a 3D role playing game application based on the methods of ​​cognitive behavioral therapy. SPARX can provide useful information to those who feel anxiety, stressed, depressed. And they can learn about cognitive behavioral thoughts while playing games.

"Kokoro works" is an online counseling service that aims at solving and easing psychological problems by giving one-on-one therapies. We provide a counseling service by clinical psychologists with expertise in this industry. Instead of just listening to patients' stories, we decide goals, create plans, and provide supports aiming for psychological problem solving.

In addition, we are currently developing psychological care services that combines biometric sensor and AR(Augmented Reality) technology. Also we will develop psychological care services using technology of holography in the future.

How We Work

In this section,we will explain about SPARX.

SPARX is a full-fledged RPG game based on the methods of ​​cognitive behavioral therapy. It is developed for teens by the researcher team of the University of Auckland as one of the programs of  Youth Mental Health Project started by the New Zealand prime minister. Our company created the Japanese version of SPARX which is localized to suit Japanese adults' needs.

According to the British Medical Journal (19 April 2012 edition), SPARX has been proved to be as effective as face-to-face counseling both at the time of beginning an intervention treatment by using SPARX and three months after that. In addition, SPARX has also received The World Summit Awards 2012 sponsored by the United Nations and International Digital Award 2013 sponsored by UNESCO Netexplo.

Through SPARX, the patients can learn treatment methods of depression, flexible thoughts of things, relaxation methods, communication methods, problem organization methods, emotion control techniques and so on.

Our company's strength is the abundance of know-how to integrate methods proven to be effective in medical science and clinical psychology into everyday devices. By providing unprecedented care experience,we aim to preventing and improving mental disorders and contributing to improve mental and physical health.

Service Overview

Psychotherapy is a treatment which is as important as drug therapy in the treatment of mental disorders.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a therapy that changes people's moods and behavior by modifying "cognition" which is a way of thinking. When an incident happens, "automatic thoughts" which are thoughts involuntarily coming into people's minds will strongly influence the feelings and actions afterwards. Therefore, in order to improve coping abilities against stress, it is necessary to grasp the tendency of  "automatic thoughts" and improve them.

This therapy is expected to deal with depression and suppress the suicidal tendencies. Moreover, it is proven by many reports to have equivalent treatment record comparing to antidepressants treatment.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is often done by counselling with doctors, but there are some issues about that. For example, more doctors who have proficient in techniques are required, and many patients have not received adequate treatment. For that reason, recently, games and applications based on cognitive behavioral therapy have appeared and a lot of patients can easily receive treatment by playing games or using applications.

Service Model

In the United Kingdom and Northern Europe, which are medical advanced countries, insurance companies and governments recommend cognitive behavioral therapy. Since the same effect as medication therapy is proved, the insurance plan for cognitive behavioral therapy is under discussion.

There are a lot of studies discussing effectiveness of the therapy technique by matching symptoms and preparing various treatment packages. For example, there is a new treatment method which provides structured treatment methods through  books or internet contents, so that the patients can learn and receive treatments by themselves. Moreover, RPG games, applications, and online content based on cognitive behavioral therapy have also appeared in recent years.

As insurance plan for cognitive behavioral therapy is being developed in this years, RPG games are expected to be introduced to hospitals as treatment methods. There are some companies  supporting reinstatement has started to utilizing RPG games in their works.

Market Situation

In this section, among a number of cognitive behavioral therapy methods, we will focus on games based on  cognitive behavioral therapy.

As a program in the Youth Mental Health Project which is led by New Zealand Prime Minister, a team of researchers and clinicians at the University of Auckland developed RPG games based on cognitive behavioral therapy for teens. By playing this game, the depression remission rate is 43.7%, which is equivalent to counseling therapy's result, and this game is localizing to meet different national needs.

In addition, this game has already been introduced to some facilities and companies.

In addition, it is also convenient for people who don't have time to go to the doctors during the working day. To sum up, by introducing games based on cognitive behavioral therapy, more people can receive treatment anywhere anytime.

Weakness

  • Continuous therapy is difficult
    • Since cognitive behavioral therapy is difficult to be effective in a short period of time, it is necessary to receive continuous therapy for a long time , but in this case, there is no counselor to monitor the therapy process, so it is possible for the patient to quit this game and the therapy will be stopped.
