History

Ama fishing differ from fishing seasons depend on resource protection and seafood type. The operation time of the sea ladies is 2 hours to 4 hours a day, and it divides once in the morning and afternoon. Diving is called "kazuku" which takes about 45 to 50 seconds and diving 20 to 40 times in 1 hour which called "Hito Kazuki". Totally, the sea ladies dive 100 times in 2 hours to 40 hours. After that, the sea ladies spend the time such as hitting the fire and warming the body, and take a meal on the beach and the sea cabin.

As tools to be used by the sea ladies, there are iso-buck, Iso-glasses, Iso Mino, Sukari, and Kamado.

Iso-buck is a buck with a height of 30 cm to 35 cm and a diameter of about 60 cm, and it plays a role as well as floating rings.
Iso-glasses are the current glasses of diving and have been used since about the Meiji Era. Until this iso-glasses were invented, they did not use any glasses when skin diving.Iso Mino is what the sea ladies use when taking abalone from the rock.Sukari is a bag containing sea urchins, sea urchins, sea urchin etc that a sea lady collects in diving.Kamado is like a firefly used by a sea lady in a sea laden cottage.

Manufacturing Process

Since abalone shells are excavated from the Shirahama remains of Toba City during the Jomon Period, it is believed that from this age there was a skin diving that is characteristic of Ama fishing.

The root of a sea lady is thought to be the Heian era, as it was written in the Engishiki which statute books of Heian era is that there were 30 women in the Shima country similar to the current sea ladies named "Kikidume". In the Edo period, the sea ladies were depicted in many Ukiyoe prints which is the traditional pictures of Edo period, and became more familiar to the world. When entering the Meiji era and the Taisho era, glasses used in sea fishing were also made and the Ama fishing was evaluated. Pictures and photographs of sea ladies were also sold, and it became a symbol of tourism and town development. Today, there are 2,000 ladies in Japan, mainly in Ise Shima, and the experience of the sea cabin is popular as a tourist attraction in various places, and take over the traditions.
