About The Facility

PFU is currently conducting research with the University of Kanazawa and EIZO co., ltd to develop a remote system which can guide interventional radiology in procedures such as endovascular treatment.

The medical field is expecting to be able to implement more treatments such as vascular catheter treatment, which does not require general anesthesia and is able to shorten hospitalization periods.

For interventional radiology, medical specialist use multiple modality and real time videos to give treatment. The process requires high skill and experience, therefore coaching by a skilled physician is needed.

Tele-instruction has problems, such as the delay of video and audio transmission, picture deterioration by compression, therefore is still technically difficult to accurately conduct tele-instruction. We can however conduct the treatment which is equal level guidance in real location by using our remote guidance system. Our remote guidance system uses a transmission technique with an extremely short delay and illustrates the image of vascular perspective accurately in real time.

How We Work

  1. Implementation of remote guidance by low-latency transmission

    • Our remote guidance system makes the guidance of the endovascular treatment possible from remote locations by using the real-time transmission technology of 4K ultra-high-definition video.
  2. The promotion of change to regional medical treatment models

    • Our remote guidance system can cooperate with the physician with treatment networks to achieve a society that provides the fastest and most optimal treatment.
  3. The improvement of treatment stability

    • The certain treatment can be conducted by increasing the interaction of medical specialist from a variety of fields.

Service Overview

Remote medical care is defined the treatment, nursing, and health improvement by using ICT by Japan Remote medical care organization. Remote medical care is divided two types.

  1. Between doctor and patient (D to P) model

    • The physician in charge of the patient communicates with the patient by TV-telephone, and the physician judge the psychosomatic state of the patient which is transmitted. Also known as remote diagnosis.

    • Remote nursing care which is where the nurses cares for the patient by receiving medical treatment at home is an example of this type of treatment.

  2. Between doctor and doctor (D to D) model

    • For this type, remote medical care is conducted between the physician in charge of the patient and the medical specialist, it is called “The remote medical care of narrow sense”. The remote image diagnosed by interpretation of CT and MRI imaging and remote pathological diagnosis are representative examples. Also, other examples include remote education and remote conference.

Service Model

To be able to provide medical service regardless of remote location, between doctor to doctor and doctor to patient, by remote support, remote diagnose, and remote health care by connecting through video and sound in real time.

Market Situation

【World market】

It is becoming traditional and developed in remote medical care communities in US, Australia, Canada, and Nordic countries.

Those countries have wide land and small population destiny, so remote medical care becomes the best and appropriate solution for arranging the environment which people can take treatment across whole country.

Actually, in the US, online access to the physician is provided for patients, so that patient does not need to wait in hospital for a long time.

The physician confirms the access from patient and reply by telephone or Internet.

All symptoms are not covered, but those services are applied in the form of telecommunication.

On the other hand, China is a developing country for remote medical technology. Like Japan, China has a regulation for the treatment, but was reconsidered recently.

Moreover, in China, hospitals are divided into categories by regulation, and in each category different medical products are required.

In these situation, remote medical care is still in a difficult situation for development.

【Japan market】

By 2016, the market of remote medical service is 7.75 billion yen, and in 2020, the market is expected to be 19.2 billion yen, 2.5 times in 2016. (Seed planning Co., Lid.)

As before, it is a trend to expand the market slowly because of anxiety for the attributes of remote treatment, cost of system and regulation of medical treatment.

However, Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reconsidered the regulation and law of medical treatment, and the market will be expected to expand in the future.

    • By using remote medical care, issues such as the lack of a doctor and guide doctor in a rural area to advice treatment can be solved.
  2. Possible utilization for disable people

    • They can take treatment in the home by using remote medical service.

  1. Introduction of system is costly.

    • It costs for system development and purchasing the products for hospital. In home and rural area there is a cost for infrastructure.
  2. Others

    • Responsibility is unclear and non-application for medical reimbursement system prevents from expanding the remote due to the perspective of the doctor.

  1. The application for medical reimbursement system

    • Many doctors would not accept remote medical care if it does not apply to the medical reimbursement system. Recent medical regulation is potentially preventing the expansion of remote medical technology.
  2. The laws for medical treatment

    • Like written above, face to face treatment is required by medical law, therefore remote treatment is not applicable for. In 2015, Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare started to reconsider remote medical treatment law, showing signs that the technology could be accepted by the medical community in the near future.

  1. The reconsideration of regulations and laws of medical treatment

    • Especially, since the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has reconsidered the law of medical treatment since 2018, the remote medical care is expected to expand.
