About The Facility

Mitsubishi Kakoki Co., Fukuoka city, National University Corporation Kyushu University, Toyota Tsusho Corporation jointly carry out the demonstration project of the system to produce hydrogen from sewage biogas obtained from sewage sludge at the Chubu Water Treatment Center in Fukuoka city and supply hydrogen to fuel cell vehicles, commissioned research from the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management.

Currently over 20% of sewage biogas obtained by digesting water sludge remains unused in Japan, but biogas have potential to supply enough energy to people.  Through this demonstration project, they aim to build a supply chain by producing hydrogen from sewage sludge and supplying it to the hydrogen station.

How We Work

At Chubu Water Treatment Center, sewage biogas is produced in when sewage sludge generated during the sewage treatment process is treated in a digestion tank (methane fermentation tank).

In this project, pure hydrogen is produced by raising the methane concentration of the sewage biogas using a membrane separation device and steam reforming with "HyGeia-A" developed by Mitsubishi Kakoki Corporation. This hydrogen is transported and supplied to each hydrogen station.

This project is also local production for local consumption supply system, since this system produces hydrogen from sewage sludge generated in Fukuoka city and uses it as energy.

In addition, carbon dioxide which is contained in sewage biogas will be discharged by membrane separator,  but it is collected by the liquefaction recovery facility and utilized for house cultivation experimentally, so this project project supply hydrogen with lower environmental impact.

A method for producing high purity hydrogen from sewage biogas generated during sewage sludge treatment in digestion tank.A membrane separation device is used to collect high-concentration methane gas from sewage biomass.

Current Situation


Chubu Water Treatment Center is the world's first facility as a real scale level facility for producing hydrogen from sludge.In japan, about 22%(about 76 million Nm3/year) of sewage biogas generated in 295 sewage treatment plant with digestion tanks is unused.If we use all the hydrogen for manufacturing, it has the potential to provide hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles of 1.86 million. (As of 2013)

Technology Scheme

Hydrogen is produced from the following process.

1. Preprocessing:

  • Sewer biogas contains approximately 40% of carbon dioxide(CO2). Therefore, we remove impurities from sewage, and get a purify highly concentrated methane gas from sewage by membrane separation equipment.

2. Hydrogen Fermentation:

  • Reform the methane purified by pre-treatment equipment to hydrogen.

3. Hydrogen supply technology:

  • Pressurize the high purity hydrogen generated by hydrogen production equipment with a compressor. And Saving in the accumulator.

Merit & Strength

1.Contribute to "Local production of energy for local consumption"

  • As it occurs in sewage treatment plants, sewage biogas is a stable urban biomass. Regional contribution is expected as energy of local consumption pond which made full use of sewage treatment plants throughout the country.

2.Less carbon dioxide emissions

  • Less carbon dioxide emissions during manufacturing compared with hydrogen from general fossil fuels, due to sewage origin.

Demerit & Weakness

1.Increase burden of initial cost

Since pretreatment equipment for removing impurities is necessary, equipment costs are high, compared to general hydrogen station.
