Facility Overview

About The Facility

70MPa Smart Hydrogen Station is a packaged hydrogen production, storage and filling equipment.

It is the world's first "facility where it is possible to pressurize hydrogen gas to 70 MPa, store it, and fill it into FCV without using a compressor with hydrogen production and storage equipment by high pressure water electrolysis".

It is a compact size with about 6 square meters floor space of main body, being smaller than the conventional type (35MPa Smart Hydrogen Station).

With Honda's proprietary high-differential-pressure electrolyzer system "Power Creator", this hydrogen station can produce up to 2.5 kg of hydrogen per 24 hours with a production pressure of 77 MPa from sunlight and commercial power supply without using a compressor and about 11 kg can be stored.

At the time of filling with hydrogen, equipment for cooling hydrogen to -20 ° C is also installed, and by filling with the compressed hydrogen filling standard, it can be filled in a fuel cell vehicle compatible with 70 MPa.

This 70MPa Smart Hydrogen Station is adopted “Technology development and demonstration project that Strengthening measures induction type CO2 discharge reduction” which is conducted by Ministry of Environment for leading technology development and demonstration for global warming countermeasure

How We Work

70MPa Smart Hydrogen Station is available to produce hydrogen as soon as connect water and electricity, and a simple, small and sustainable hydrogen station.

Packaged system drastically shortens installation time after shipping and Compact Package drastically reduces installation space requirements since it is fit in a small hydrogen station installation criteria.

By utilizing the renewable energy power, such as solar power, waste generation and bio-power generation of the region, from the manufacturing stage of the hydrogen in the fuel to use the stage of the fuel cell vehicle, this system does not emit any CO2.

Equipment to consistently produce, store and supply hydrogen in hydrogen station. It plays an important role to provide hydrogen for mobility using fuel cells. Equipment such as hydrogen production equipment, compressor, accumulator, cooler, filling machine etc. are installed.

Equipment of manufacturing hydrogen is divided several types.

Current Situation

Recently, environmentally friendly renewable energy such as sunlight and waste has begun to be used as a source of hydrogen generation in on-site hydrogen station.

As a result, there is no need for transportation so containers such as gas cylinders are unnecessary. It is a clean energy in a true sense.

*Gas cylinders are unnecessary, but accumulator is necessary for storage of hydrogen.

In addition, it made it possible to downsize while maintaining high performance by developing technology, so handling has become easier.

Technology Scheme

1. Production and storage of hydrogen

  • The fuels such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, methanol, GTL, desulfurized gasoline, naphtha and water are stored in the hydrogen station, and hydrogen is reformed in the hydrogen production equipment to take out hydrogen. After that, the hydrogen gas is pressurized by the compressor and is temporarily stored in the accumulator.

    High-pressure water electrolysis system of Honda’s smart hydrogen station does not use compressor because hydrogen is compressed when manufacturing and storage for accumulator.

2. Filling in fuel cell vehicles

  • The hydrogen gas is rapidly filled in the tank of the fuel cell car. The temperature rises by the adiabatic compression, so it is necessary to lower the temperature of the tank to -40 ° C with the cooler. After that, the hydrogen is ready to be supplied by using a filling machine.
