Cultured Pearl

Traditional Artifact & Local Speciality > Local Speciality > Marine product > Cultured Pearl

The pearl can be made in the situation that tiny sand and creature in the shell stimulates inside of shell body.
There are two type of the pearl. Natural pearl and artificial pearl.

The first cultured pearl in the world was developed in China. Since 16th century, pearl was actively pursued and most popular pearl was Buddha's pearl which has the design of Buddha made by lead. Subsequently, Linne, scientist in Sweden, invented the underlying way to cultivate cultured pearl.

In Japan, Kokichi Mikimoto started cultivating semicircle pearl. He worked on hard enough to cultivate cultured pearl but finally he could not cultivate it. Mr., Nishikawa, inherited Mikimoto's ambition, established the way to make the pearl bag by implanting tiny mantle inside of shell.

Manufacturing Process

1. Cultivation of mother shell

  • Choose the mother shell that has the colorful shell. Then, harvest egg from mother shell and artificial cross it with the cum from father shell. After that put off the hatched young shells and cultivate them. After they gradually they got bigger, put them into cultivation basket.

2. Putting nucleus into shell

  • Put nucleus which is made by cut shell and piece which is made by mantle into inside of grown shell.

3. Cultivation of surgical shell

  • Put them into cultivation basket again, and cultivate in the sea.

4. Putting them off the coast

  • Hook them on raft with a wealth of plankton.

5. Care

  • Clean the shell and prepare for gathering pearl.

6. Picking pearl

  • The color of pearl will be so colorful during autumn to winter so pick pearl up from December to January.

1. Price is almost same no matter what size is.

  • The average of artificially raised nacre is 0.5mm to 1mm no matter what size is. The pearl is valued only by nacre size so the price of cultured pearl is almost same.

2. Less scar and more colorful comparing with natural pearl.

  • The natural pearl is only made in nature so they have scar and their color is irregular. Therefore, it is so hard to find high quality natural pearl. However, The cultured pearl can be colorful and faultlessness depending on cultivation environment.
